Acquisition and preservation of Try/on Life Community Farm

Dear Brenna,

The Portland Community Land Trust (PCLT) is pleased to submit this Letter of Interest in support of Try/on Life Community Farm's proposal to acquire the 6.9 acre property at 11640 SW Boones Ferry Rd. and preserve it in perpetuity for affordable housing, farming, natural ecosystems, experiential education, and sustainable urban living.

PCLT is an independent nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to the creation of high-quality, sustainable, affordable housing and the long-term stewardship of land. Try/on Life Community Farm's mission to place the land in trust to promote affordable and ecologically responsible living spaces, as well as a community education program promoting sustainability complements PCLT's governing mission and goals. In keeping with PCLT's long-term outlook on land, we have a special interest in sustainable development models such as those envisioned for Try/on Life Community Farm. Finally, this site would help link PCLT in to Southwest Portland, where we currently have a minimal presence.

PCLT was established with the goal of partnering with other community-based organizations in the development and support of affordable housing. To date, PCLT has participated in the development of 37 permanently affordable homes and over 100 rental apartments in partnership with nonprofit developers and local funders. In these partnerships, PCLT ensures long-term affordability by owning the land and entering into 99-year leases that limit the re-sale value of the overlying improvements (typically single family homes).

As your project proceeds, we will be pleased to discuss ways in which ownership of the land by PCLT and execution of a long-term land lease may accomplish our shared goals for this property. If Try/on Life Community Farm is successful in obtaining financing and a purchase agreement for this parcel, my next step will be to present a detailed proposal to the Board of Directors for approval.
