Saturday July 16th, 11am-7pm

All day TLC Farm will host a series of sustainability workshops. Topics include: permaculture techniques, natural building, hand spinning & solar energy (full description below). The day will conclude with a facilitated drum and percussion circle at 6 pm led by experienced percussionist, Dan Miller.

Workshop Schedule

• Permaculture Techniques: 11a - 6p

  Joe & Pam Lietch from the Portland Permaculture Institute apply permaculture techniques to the gardens of TLC Farm. Permaculture is an innovative system & approach to designing sustainable human settlements. $50 suggested donation.

• Good Eatin': 11a - 1p

  Lee Cowan & Matt James demonstrate preparation of local and organic food through raw food dishes and cob oven cooking. $10 suggested donation.

• Intro to Hand Spinning: 11a - 1p

  Brenna Bell will teach the basics of hand spinning yarn on a drop spindle. Participants will also take turns on a spinning wheel. Wool provided, but bring your own drop spindle (available at many yarn shops). $15 suggested donation.

• Lunch: 1p - 2p

  Pizza from the earthen oven and salad from the garden

• Portland Community Gardens Talk: 2p - 3p

  Pramod Parajuli, chair of the Portland International Institute for Environment, Culture & Learning at PSU, discusses sustainability through local agriculture.

• Natural Building: 3:30p - 6p

  Joshua Klyber leads a hands-on demonstration of interior earthen wall plastering techniques, including using natural pigment and sculpture. $15-25 suggested donation.

• Intro to Solar Energy: 3:30p - 5p

  Tania Parks, from the Solar Energy Association of Oregon, leads an exploration of solar energy and its practical applications. $10 suggested donation.

• Intro to Biodiesel: 5p - 6p

  Brian Bontempo discusses how and where to purchase biodiesel, the issues in using biodiesel in older vehicles and in the cold weather, and how to heat your house with biodiesel. $10 suggested donation.

• Nature Walks: noon & 3p

  Guided nature walks in Tryon Creek State Park.

• Rhythm & Drum Circle: 6p - 7p

  Dan Miller, Hope Medford & Tynan Pierce facilitate community building group rhythm experience, for players of all ages and experience levels. Percussion instruments provided, and we welcome you to bring your own.
